Rees Jeffreys Road Fund MSc Bursary scheme is now open for the academic year starting in autumn 2024.
The Trustees of Rees Jeffreys Road Fund are confirming their commitment to supporting study at MSc level for people wishing to study road or transport related subjects.
Studying for an MSc can make a great difference to an individual’s career.
Olivia Hammond was awarded a bursary in 2022 to study for an MSc in Transport and Planning at Cardiff University. Olivia says, “With the support of the Rees Jeffreys Road fund, it made it possible to start my transport planning journey by undertaking a masters in Transport and Planning at Cardiff University. This course highlighted to me the pivotal role that transport systems play within towns and cities, giving me the opportunity to gain an expansive insight into the dynamic and intricate world of transport and mobility. Whilst studying I found a particular interest in sustainable transport, and the importance of integrating sustainable concepts into future transport planning and policy.”
Olivia goes on to say, “Receiving the Rees Jeffreys Road Fund bursary and undertaking my Transport and Planning Masters has enabled me to realise my desire to contribute towards shaping the future of mobility in a sustainable, fair and innovative way, and is the start of what I hope to be a meaningful and exciting career within the transport planning industry.”
Dr Antoneta Horbury was awarded a bursary in 1992 to study for an MSc in Transport run jointly by UCL and Imperial College London and went on to complete a PhD on “Automatic vehicle location technology: Applications for buses” in 1997. Antoneta tells us, “Since then I have been a post doc at UCL looking at railway safety cases, a service planner at London Underground, a research analyst and principal transport planner at London Councils, a rail policy analyst at the ORR and the Transport Policy manager at the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. I am now the Director of Policy and Technical Analysis at the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation and have the Bus Centre of Excellence within my team. I have enjoyed my career in transport enormously and I am very grateful to the Rees Jeffreys Road Fund for making it all possible.”
The Fund will provide up to eight Bursaries for MSc students starting in the academic year 2024-2025. The Fund is keen to support people thinking of starting a career in the roads and transport sector, as well as supporting people who are already mid-way through their career and wish to progress their professional knowledge and expertise.
Bursaries are available to support study in a range of subjects including engineering, management and planning in relation to roads, highways or transport. Applicants may be studying full time or part time but must demonstrate a commitment to a career in highways or transport. The Bursary is provided in staged payments over the period of study. The Bursaries are aimed at students who would not otherwise have the means to pay for the study fees.
All enquiries about undertaking MSc study and making an application to Rees Jeffreys Road Fund for a Bursary should be made directly to the thirteen universities listed on the Fund website here. Universities are provided with the full terms and conditions of the Rees Jeffreys Road Fund MSc Bursary scheme, and the application form which must be endorsed by the university making the application on behalf of the student. The deadline for universities to submit applications to Rees Jeffreys Road Fund is 10am on 28th June 2024.
