Transform Scotland have published a report exploring whether European-style zebra crossings could work in Scotland. The research project was funded by Rees Jeffreys Road Fund.
Transform Scotland undertook the project in partnership with Edinburgh Napier University.
A limited frequency of crossing points for Scottish pedestrians makes walking journeys longer, inconvenient and potentially unsafe. Local authorities may want to install more crossings but often find that the number of requests for formal crossing points greatly exceeds their budget. The prompting the study team to explore European-style zebra crossings to see if they could be a suitable alternative to traditional pedestrian crossing. The study proposes an alternative and more affordable European-style zebra crossing design which does not require an electricity supply.
The study findings are that that European-style zebra crossings could be suitable in for 20mph zones in Scotland, alongside other traffic-calming measures.
