Rees Jeffreys Road Fund 150 Competition:
1st December 2021 marked 150 years since the birth of the Fund’s founder William Rees Jeffreys. In recognition of his remarkable vision of the future of roads and how they matter to all of us, the trustees launched the Rees Jeffreys Road Fund 150 Competition in September 2021
The Fund received nearly 150 entries from schools, individuals, businesses and universities who sought to answer the question, “What’s your vision of the way in which our roads (motorways, highways, or streets and footways) could best work for us all as we square up to the challenges of the next 50 years?“
Competition entrants could use any format they liked to share their idea – we received poems, drawings, images of working models, as well as videos. Entries were received from schools, universities, charities, businesses and individuals across the UK. Below is a very small selection of some of the entries we received (click on images for larger view).
By December 2021 the entries were whittled down to seven ideas that each received £5,000 funding to develop their idea and compete for £150,000 of grant funding. Many other excellent ideas were highly commended. You can find out about some of the amazing ideas sent in by watching this video capturing some of the best entries. The school entries are particularly worth watching, as the children came up with some really great ideas!
In March 2022 the final winners of the £150,000 grant funding were announced at a gala event at the Royal Academy of Engineering.
The joint winners were Eloy and Reed Mobility. You can read more about their winning ideas and our other finalists on our special Competition website here www.rjrf.uk. We will be sharing news about the progress of their projects in due course.
