Faraday Challenge Days 2023-2024

This page tells you about the Education projects we have provided grant funding to over recent years.

2025

  • A grant of £13,499 was made to The Brilliant Club to run a programme called “Can you shape your city?” supporting 133 school children to engage in real-world transport issues and improve their access to university-level study. You can find out more about the project here.
  • A grant of £20,000 was made to the Highways Sector Council to develop their “Ways of Life” project promoting the wide range of careers available in the transport sector, to encourage people to consider highways a career option.
  • £27,900 was awarded to West Midlands Combined Authority to collaborate with Curiosity Box to develop a STEM educational project for schools to connect with the ITS World Congress in Birmingham in 2027.

2024

  • A grant of £3,735 was awarded to SATRO to develop and deliver a programme aimed at primary school age children, encouraging them to think about and engage with the role, habitats, sustainability and safety of rural roads.
  • £19,000 was awarded to charity Wheels for Wellbeing to develop guidance and online training for transport professionals, to grow awareness and understanding of how to provide inclusive cycling. The project collated the latest research, expertise and design to create new Guidance.
  • A grant of £7,020 was awarded to charity Living Paintings, who will be developing 3-D library books for blind and partially sighted children, to introduce the concepts, ideas and examples of active travel, including micro-nobility, reduced carbon transport and vehicles of the future.
  • The Fund launched a new professional development grant scheme in 2024 called Ready for the Future. Three awards were made in the first tranche of grants, totaling £7,281.
  • Eight bursaries were awarded to students taking up studies in MSc transport, totaling £75,490.

2023

  • Fun Kids Radio received a grant of £10,000 to deliver an eight-part radio podcast educating children about Roads in 2050. The programme achieved considerable reach to a large audience of children;
  • Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation were provided with a grant of £30,000 to develop guidance and training to support highways professionals with carbon calculation and accounting. The free training can be accessed here.
  • Seven bursaries of £10,000 each were awarded to students studying for MSc in transport.

2022

2021

  • Bader Media Entertainment CIC: A grant of £8,000 was made to Bader to create a set of alternative videos, Thrash the Trash. The project was funded in conjunction with Clean Up Britain, to engage a new audience in discussions about roadside litter. You can read more about the videos here.
  • LCRIG: a grant of £30,000 was made to Local Councils Road Innovation Group to support development of online training resources for workers in the road sector, to improve the accessibility and opportunity for workers to undertake professional development and essential training.
  • Engineering Development Trust: EDT were awarded a grant of £8,000 to develop a ”Insight into Highways Engineering” module to encourage young people to take up engineering roles in the roads sector.
  • RJRF 150 Competition: In December 2021 the Fund completed the first stage of the Rees Jeffreys Road Fund 150 Competition celebrating 150 years since the birth of the Fund’s founder William Rees Jeffreys.  Grants totalling £20,000 were awarded in December 2021 to winning primary and secondary school entries in the 150 Competition.  Information about the  successful entrants can be found here.
  • Bursaries: Of the four bursaries awarded in the year, three students were successful in taking up their Masters studies, and received bursary awards of £10,000 each.

2020

  • Bursaries: The Fund awards financial support of £10,000 each to postgraduates studying in transport related subjects. Although the scheme was paused for 2020/21 the Fund decided, because of exceptional circumstances, to make one bursary award to a UCL student.

2019

  • Children’s Radio: a grant of £10,450 was awarded to fund an innovative series of short radio programmes for very young children on road design. You can listen to ‘What a Great Road’ here.
  • Engineers without Borders: a grant of £5,000 was awarded to fund the 2019 Engineering Challenge programme aimed at inspiring people to become engineers and apply their skills by making a positive contribution as responsible global citizens.
  • Living Paintings: a grant of £5,684 was awarded to fund the production of a Touch to See Book entitled Vroom! a transport compendium for 4-7 year old blind and partially sighted children. You can read more about the completed book in our news item here.
  • CIHT: a grant of £4,500 was awarded to fund the first phase of work to create a Future Transport Visions Group to promote the development of  young professionals network. You can read all about their projects on our News page here.
  • DriveSafe and StaySafe Ltd: a grant of £10,000 was awarded to fund the development of “The Conies“ – an interactive digital platform to educate and empower children to be aware of their own road safety. You can find their new website which is full of free resources here.
  • Bursaries: continuing the programme of providing financial support of £10,000 each to post graduates studying in transport related subjects. In 2019 eight bursaries were awarded.

2018

  • PhD Application: a grant of £18,000 was awarded to a PhD student to carry out his studies at Leeds University.
  • CIHT: a grant of £10,000 was awarded towards the cost of mounting and evaluating an exhibition to promote Women in Transport.
  • SATRO: a grant of £2,500 was awarded to support work to help young people to be inspired and enthusiastic about their education and their future careers especially in the area of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM).
  • Engineers without Borders: a grant of £2,500 was awarded to fund a Design Challenge programme aimed at inspiring people to become engineers and apply their skills by making a positive contribution as responsible global citizens.
  • Bursaries: continuing the programme of providing financial support of £10,000 each to post graduates studying in transport related subjects. In 2018 eight bursaries were awarded.

2017

  • EDT Headstart: a grant of £9,010 was awarded to fund hands-on Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) activities and engineering taster courses to encourage young people into technology based careers.
  • SATRO: a grant of £2,500 was awarded to support work to help young people to be inspired and enthusiastic about their education and their future careers especially in the area of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM).
  • Bursaries: continuing the programme of providing financial support of £10,000 each to post graduate students studying in transport related subjects. In 2017, seven bursaries were awarded.
  • University of South Wales: a grant of £19,754 was awarded to fund the development and testing of an educational road safety game for children with DCD.

2016

  • EDT Headstart: a grant of £7,850 was awarded to EDT Headstart to fund hands-on Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) activities and engineering taster courses to encourage young people into technology-based careers.
  • Safe Drive Stay Alive: grants were awarded to Surrey Fire and Rescue Service (£5,500) and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Services (£5,000) to support road safety project work.
  • West Midlands Fire Service: a grant of £4,000 was awarded to fund the production of a road safety film.
  • In 2 Change: a grant of £7,075 was awarded to support work with prisoners and ex-offenders to change driver related behaviour
  • SATRO: a grant of £2,400 was awarded to SATRO to support work to help young people to be inspired and enthusiastic about their education and their future careers especially in the area of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM).
  • Bursaries: continuing the programme of providing financial support of £10,000 each to PhD students studying in transport related subjects. In 2016, eight bursaries were awarded.
  • Arkwright Scholarships Trust: continuing the annual sponsorship of two Rees Jeffreys awards for £2,000 each to sixth form students with a particular interest in engineering.

2015

  • EDT Headstart: a grant of £10,000 was awarded to continue the growth and development of transport courses.
  • Surrey Fire and Rescue: a grant of £3,500 was awarded to Surrey Fire and Rescue to support the ‘Safe Drive Stay Alive’ project.
  • SATRO: a grant of £1,800 was awarded to SATRO to support events to inspire and enthuse young people.
  • Bursaries: continuing the programme of providing financial support of £10,000 each to masters students in transport related subjects. In 2015, eight bursaries were awarded.
  • Arkwright Scholarships Trust: continuing the annual sponsorship of two Rees Jeffreys awards for £2,000 each to sixth form students with a particular interest in engineering.
